Chester Lumus has stolen $10,000 from a bank in London and has headed badly wounded to the village of Hemsley where Sarah lives with her sister Enid and their lodger Mr Pembroke. Mr Pembroke is out at the cinema with Enid leaving Sarah all alone in the house when the police come to warn her about the bandit on the run.
