In Burlington, Vermont, on the campus of the University of Vermont, stands the statue of a man. Part of the inscription on the statue reads "Justin Smith Morrill, Strafford, Vermont. In congress for forty-three years 1857-1899. A term of service longer than that of his predecessors or successors. Probably there aren't that many people in America who will recognise that name, but at least one fifth of all resident college students in the United States today, owe their education to the efforts of Justin Smith Morrill.
