The story begins near the outskirts of a small New England town. It is early evening. Situated on a high hill that overlooks the town is a large ancient mansion, the ancestral home of five generations of DeWitts. A car turns off the highway and into the private road. Slowly it crawls along the winding and bumpy driveway, its headlights illuminating the crumbling ghost-like mansion. At last the car comes to a stop. An elderly man gets out and walks up the wide stone steps to the front door, he lifts the huge knocker on the door ....
