Our story today opens with a lady called Miss Fry on a hospital ward, talking with her physician about her recent suicide attempt. She has been confined to the hospital, as the authorities have an obligation to make sure she doesn't try to harm herself again - to try and heal the spirit as well as the body. Mentally she is in a terrible place, but against all odds, she strikes up unlikely friendships with some of the other patients...
