It is 9:50pm Saturday night October 14th 1949. There is a square dance in progress at the Fun Spot, a barn-like dance hall on the outskirts of Bankerville in West Texas. Mrs Mort Rogers a rancher’s wife is seated in the corner waiting for her husband’s return with some soda pop. She looks up at a stranger approaching who asks her to dance against her will. Her husband tells the man to get out of there which he does but hangs around outside waiting to cause trouble.
