Red Mountain Arizona is 425 miles east of California and Charlie and his wife are staying in a motel there just off route 66 with the rail road running along side it. When they leave the motel to go out for a meal a truck slows down to let them in but then shines his beams on them. They let him overtake then he slows down to 15 miles. When they try to overtake he speeds up. When they pull up at the restaurant he follows them in there.
