In 1907, Leah Sykes and John Young were married and started out their married life on a sharecrop farm in Southampton County, Virginia. They were poor - only one generation up from slavery - and had nothing but their four bare hands and faith in the future. Their small family grew to sixteen over the years, and the two parents worked hard to put their children through high school and college.
