Ripley and Coburn had gone to Armstrong’s shop to steal some important papers but Armstrong had tried to take his gun and in the struggle the gun had fatally gone off. Ripley wanted to give himself up but Coburn advised him not to and offered to get rid of Armstrong’s body for a fee of $50,000. Ripley knew that Coburn was a blackmailer and was reluctant to get involved but what alternative did he have but the death chair.
