Young Lieutenant Siberts is late back from his assignment to collect 60 horses. When he returns he tells Captain Quincy that Indians have ambushed them. He returns with only 35 horses and one man dead. Captain Quincy dresses him down for not following orders and for fighting back to try to save the horses. However Quincy accepts full responsibility for his actions to his superiors and then takes Siberts as his second in command on his mission to recover the stolen horses, punish the Indians responsible for stealing them and killing Sergeant Limeley and to prevent a blood feud.
