Pete Carlson of Star Mutual received a letter, which read, “If you’re wanting to know who murdered Helen Bates you pay no mind to that person or persons unknown. You just look real close to home. Look REAL close to home.” It was signed anonymous and post marked Shady Lane, Vermont. Helen Bates was killed there a month ago shot to death and Star Mutual carried a $10,000 policy on her and the beneficiary was Ben Bates, her husband. The coroner’s jury brought in an open verdict and there has been nothing turned up since. Star Mutual was just on the point of paying out the policy but now they wanted Johnny Dollar to investigate.
