Whenever a crime is committed the police attempt to deduce what happened on the basis of clues found at the scene. Logic and probability are employed to create the most accurate hypothesis possible and from this it is hoped the crime may be solved and the criminals apprehended, but logic operates on appearances and as we all know things are often not as they seem.
This story is about two detectives, one young, the other old. They solve a complicated murder together with one of their only clues being a spent safety match.
