Three men are sailing up north to Dawson city and playing poker. Chris Rourke is on a winning streak and Charlie McNeil leaves the game to walk his red setter dog round the deck. Sam continues to play and loses all his money and doesn’t know how he is going to tell his partner Abe that he has lost his half of the money from the sale of their business. Chris makes a deal with Sam that he will grubstake some money for a quarter claim in any gold they find and Sam also gives him a pen he owns with a diamond in it. When he does tell him Abe is furious, as he has heard that Chris Rourke is a crooked gambler. Charlie McNeil also believed this and when they embarked he told Rourke that when he had some money he would play again but not with Rourke’s cards. Rusty his red setter dog did not like Chris Rourke.
