In the parlor of the house are three people Josephine wife of the river man and stepmother to Sarah Belle his teenage daughter and Jabe the hired help on the farm. Sarah Belle is concerned for her pa who has been gone in the pouring rain for more than six hours now. She is also concerned that her stepmother and Jabe don’t seem to be at all worried.
