This is the story of Christopher Latham Sholes who invented the typewriter in 1868 while working on a paging machine that printed numbers on pages. His friend wondered why they couldn't have a machine that printed words so Sholes just went ahead and invented it. He really just wanted to spend his days playing chess but was talked in to spending his time making his typewriter something that would revolutionize American businesses.
