It was a long ride to make even for Kit Kaven, south from the cool rolling hills of the Bar-Twenty to the Maser Country. From a land marked with place names like Dead Wood to the Alkaline deserts still carrying the sand for the Spaniards, to the desert of death, to the mysterious stream which suddenly vanishes underneath the ground.
