John is headmaster at a school and believes that children, especially his own son need a sense of discipline and guidance in life. However his wife Lillian, Alan's step mum overcompensates with love and leniency towards Alan. His father can see that  Alan has mastered the rule of divide and conquer where his parents are concerned but the family are brought together when Alan gets in with the wrong boys and his actions lead to near tragic consequences.
