It was the quiet after the storm, and Pat and Alicia Adams had said every hateful, hot word to each other that they could. There was nothing more to say. It had been a last ditch attempt to resolve their marital problems, but it had failed, and now Pat was driving them back from Salt Lake City to San Francisco, and the silence was deafening. 

Eventually, Alicia breaks the silence, and suggests that they both need to accept that it is over between them, but still, they agree to pull over, and at least try to talk, hoping to patch up their differences...
