The story begins inside a confederate military prison late in the civil war in September 1863. The prisoner is Spencer Kellogg Brown, son of New York abolitionist Orville Chester Brown, and this is his story and how he was mistaken for John Brown's son and how he became a hero for the Free Soil men, the Unionist army.
