The true story of the men of the Navy hospital corp, and a heroic pharmacists mate who performed emergency surgery aboard a US Navy submarine. Eddie Cochrane has completed his training as a pharmacists mate, first class, and has been assigned to submarine duty at Pearl Harbor. On going aboard the sub, he finds his old friend and rival Rick, who because of a misunderstanding is resentful to find him on the same submarine. The Navy medical specialist, Wheeler Bryson Lipes, who actually performed the operation is interviewed after the story.
