Archie is somewhat surprised to find that Nero Wolfe is about to take a trip up state to see a Mr. Finley. But then Mr. Finley happens to grow orchids, a passion of Nero's and in particular a black strain of orchid. However, the beginning of the case of The Phantom Fingers actually had nothing to do with black orchids. The first act was played in an old house at the end of an old road. It was short and simple, as short as life and as simple as murder.
