Lance Lauderback had torn the bar apart two hours before Philip Marlowe arrived there looking for him. It was time for him to get together with his client. A woman he had never met named Daphne McGregor had hired him by long distance call five hours ago to find the hard drinking sailor, Lauderback, who had to be aboard a ship she was sailing on at 4:00 am.
