From the time of the first printing press in 1450 until late in the 19th century all type was set by hand. The invention of a linotype or mechanical typesetter by Ottmar Mergenthaler made practical such things as inexpensive books, modern newspapers and other printed matter thereby giving tremendous impetus to the spread of education and knowledge.
