In the 1870s, Albuquerque in New Mexico was a lively town. It had discovered, and was exploiting, the rich timber, mineral and agricultural resources in its vicinity, and it was becoming important as a wool growing center, and located as it was in the fertile valley of the Rio Grande, it was attracting droves of eastern and midwestern farmers looking for inexpensive land.
