Dan Hardesty had killed a man but was unable to prove it was self-defence and had been convicted of murder. He had managed to escape while they were taking him to San Quentin and now on board the steamship Maloa heading for San Francisco he meets socialite Joan Ames and the two fall in love. However their love is doomed, each knowing nothing of the other’s destiny, Joan is terminally ill and police detective Steve Burke is also aboard the ship to apprehend Dan.
