Marshall Matt Dillon and Chester while out on the prairie come across a man named Cloyed who is preparing a noose. He tells Marshall Dillon that he has promised his dead love that he would avenge her by hanging the man the man that killed her once he admitted to his guilt. Marshal Dillon tells him that only the law can decided whether a man is to be hung.
