It's possible that the caveman sat around the fire after dark and told stories of strange shapes they had seen, and awful sounds they had heard, and wondered aloud if their ancestors were trying to get in touch with them. We can't know for sure because they could not record their experience, but a ghost story from the 4th century before Christ has come down to us...
