Laurie Ann McRae likes working the night shift as a phone operator as it means she can shut herself off and not get hurt again after Steve met someone while away at war and married her. Greg Munger is a Trans West driver and calls his girlfriend Carol Martin every night through the operator Laura. But 22 year old Laurie has found herself looking forward to his calls though she won't admit that. When he doesn't call for 3 nights she discovers he has been in jail following an accident in which 4 people were killed. When he does ring Carol doesn't want to know but Laurie wants to help him.
