Sam Doran has been called to the hospital to see his estranged wife who has been in a serious road accident and is in surgery. 

His son John arrives at the hospital and seeing the concern of his father asks him why they couldn't make a go of it. The story reflects on their life together, their hopes, their arguments and Sam knows now that it is only when you think that you are about to lose someone that you realize how much they mean to you.
