Burt and his wife Ada, had come to the Yukon territory during the gold rush, and had settled in Selkirk. Burt had staked a claim, and had worked it during the spring and summer without success. The young couple's savings had been used as a part payment on a cabin at the edge of town, and when fall approached, Burt, discouraged with his unsuccessful search for gold, took a job in the local bank teller.
