On the road to Tibet, many miles up in the Himalayas, is a kingdom which is exactly 4 miles squared. The ruler of the kingdom, was a man whose revenues were less than £400 per year, and these were expended in the maintenance of one elephant, and a standing army of five men. However, the King was a tributary to her majesty's Indian government, so after receiving the King's urgent request that a representative of the crown visit him at once, I had set out with my assistant Mr Leach to respond accordingly.
