Mary Cecilia Rogers was murdered in the vicinity of New York City in the summer of 1842. It was still an unsolved crime in November when The Mystery of Marie Roget by Edgar Allen Poe was published. It paralleled in every essential detail the murder of Rogers. Poe wrote it far from the scene of the atrocity but only the newspaper reports of the day. Never the less the subsequent confession connected with the murder of Marr Rogers confirmed not only the killer named by Poe but all the chief details by which he arrived at his identification.
