Manchester - England, 1889. A murky dawn hovers over the smoke encrusted chimneys of cotton mills and rooming houses and steals slowly through the grimy window of a dreary attic room. There, in the yellow glow of a kerosene lamp, a young man sits writing at a desk. On the cover of the ruled book in which he writes is the neatly printed legend, Personal Journal of William Essex.
