Earl Haney has been found in an alley barely alive with his head split open. He managed to tell Matt Dillon that it was a real tall man with red hair who had done this to him and robbed him before he fell unconscious. Matt goes after the wrong man and Schofield, the banker who was hired to take Haney’s place, was killed and robbed in the same way as Haney. The killer had bragged that he wasn’t planning to push his luck again but with Dillon out of town it was easy.
