Lillian Collins was a childless woman with a husband who worked away a lot. She had run up a gambling debt of $10,000 and needed to pawn her jewellery, which was insured for that amount, to clear her debt without her husband finding out. She removed her jewellery from the bank safe deposit but before she could pawn it she discovered that it had been stolen.
