The year is 1561 and Mary Stuart returns to Scotland from France to take up the throne. She is met by a friend in the shape of the Earl of Bothwell and an enemy in the Rev, John Knox. Meanwhile in London, Queen Elizabeth I. schemes with her counsel to bring about her downfall, but she is keen not to be associated with any plots, she has to be seen to be squeaky clean during the Scottish Queens downfall.
