During the American Revolution, Mary Murray became known in folklore as the Quaker woman who in 1776, delayed British General, William Howe, after the British victory against American forces at Kips Bay. As the story goes, she invited the officers to tea in her mansion atop Murray Hill, which delayed the British troops long enough to allow a successful American rebel retreat.
