The story begins in the San Francisco offices of the John Bates Importing Company. In a large, well furnished office, Horace Reiker, a junior partner in the firm, sits behind his desk staring unbelievably at a letter, which he holds in trembling hands. He reads the letter a second time then agitatedly turns to the intercom box on his desk.
