Mr Mathews was an unemployed Shakespearean actor so when his wife made him apply for a job as floorwalker in a department store he took it reluctantly but with good grace. When he discovers she is about to leave him with her lover this is the ultimate belittlement despite spending 15 years being belittled by his wife. Then an idea comes to him and he offers to disappear and in his seeming death give his wife the freedom to marry and the house and in return she must collect the $20,000 insurance and give it to her husband.
