The King of Navarre and three of his lords, Dumaine, Longueville and Berowne, swear an oath to scholarship, founding an academy by which the four of them must practice fasting and avoid contact with all women and love for three long years. As the play begins, the King discusses the academy with his three friends.

Written in 1591 this was one of William Shakespeare's earliest comedies.
