It's the end of a long hot summer and Gildy is sitting in his shirt sleeves on the porch of his home in Summerfield. He's alone with Birdie on a vacation, his nephew Leroy at camp and his niece Marjorie visiting friends. And so having eaten an inadequate supper prepared by himself and feeling the need for human companionship he sees his old friend Judge Hooker going by and calls out to him. However the judge has an engagement with a young lady and Gildy is fed up of another quiet evening in with a book!
