It is mid afternoon September 7th 1938. Two loggers employed by the Gulf Lumber Company are marking timber near a lonely stretch of company logging road in the Piny Woods region of East Texas. They see a company car turned over and when they go to attend they discover the paymaster dead in there and a bag full of money. Against the wishes of his young apprentice Mark, Bull steals the money and sets the car on fire.
