The story begins in Baker Street on a windy December night in 1900. Holmes and Watson are sat in front of a blazing fire listening to a tale being told by a young man called Alexander McMorris, the 7th Earl of Lochnair. He is relating the history of the Earls of Lochnair and he goes on to say that the 1st Earl lost a foot at the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. In spite of this terrible handicap he fought on until he eventually died from loss of blood and ever since that day the ghost of the 1st Earl has appeared in the Castle of Lochnair before a tragedy has beset the family.
