In his day, Oliver Lyon was certainly London's most popular and highest paid portrait artist, and young, and a bachelor. His studio was in St John's Wood, and he accepted whatever commissions he cared to. He had a secretary to take care of the day-to-day chores, and on the day our story begins, he was trying to paint from memory a girl he had seen on a park bench in the gardens in Munich.
