Simon Templar is in the bar trying to get a drink but Dougan is more intent on the philosophies of life. To quote one customer “We are here today and gone tomorrow”. Then he points out the blonde in the bar Maddie Norton singer who used to be in musical comedy and who made it big. Then she gets palsy with Joe Maxen at that time small punk but with her money he works himself up where he now owns the biggest gambling joint around. So now he’s a big shot and he doesn’t want to know her anymore. Maddie approaches Templar at the bar acting all drunk and leans into him. But her drunken leaning was more than that, she’d picked his pocket but not for his money, for his revolver.
