The tale begins in Paris 1794, in the wake of the Revolutionary terror, where we find the American ambassador to France, James Monroe, and his wife Elizabeth, who are seeking the release of the French writer, Madame Lafayette, who is a political prisoner being held in a Revolutionary War prison, who is under arrest as an enemy of the people.
