The story Ladies in retirement is set in England in 1885. On the marshlands in the region of the Thames estuary a chill wind blows forever from the sea. It’s a cheerless grey landscape broken only by an occasional lonely house. At the doorway of one of these houses stands a girl named Helen Creed and in her hand she holds a letter just delivered. This letter contains the lives of many people but will mean the death of one.
