Kit was born in Madison, Kentucky on Christmas eve in 1809, while he was still a baby his parents loaded their household goods into a covered wagon and moved on west to Franklin, Missouri, the first steps in Kits life long restless pilgrimage. He grew up on the edge of the Indian country and learnt to shoot and ride almost as soon as he could walk, by the time he was seventeen he had been working two years in a saddlers shop. He didn't like it much, it was too confining, but he had his dreams.
