John Barby was afraid for the first time since his wife Mary had been gone and he had done his best to keep Karl hidden like he promised his mother he would but that day Karl got out to see the kitten. Karl killed the kitten and the neighbors complained and now Mr Wilk from the home had come to collect him. John Barby manages to stall him for another night and he gets away with his son, fearful of what the home might do to him.
