It is the year 1826, and Peter Cooper, the industrialist, from New York, has just been thrown out of the inn he was supposed to be staying at. Puzzled by the inn keeper's apparently causeless emnity, Peter finds him tending his horses in the stables at the rear of the inn, and demands to know what the problem is.
