Remember the old fable about the dog crossing a bridge with a bone in its mouth? How he saw his reflection in the water, and thought it was another dog, holding a larger bone? So he tried to get it. However, when he opened his mouth, the bone fell out of it, and he ended up with an empty stomach. This little story reminds Jane of Irma - because she must have looked in the mirror one day, opened her mouth, and her brain fell out!
